Committing to Uncertainty
Do you ever stop to think about all that you are committed to?
We often think about our commitments as obligations, things we have to do to keep our lives, and the lives of others, moving in a stable direction.
But what if we were able commit to instability and uncertainty in service of true transformation?
I don’t mean the uncertainty and instability that is being created daily by authoritarianism as it tries to turn back time to the days when patriarchy dominated every worldview.
I mean the kind of uncertainty that comes when we choose to let go of the familiar structures we have relied on for generations, for lifetimes, and begin to vision a different way of living in-collective.
But this takes a willingness to see where we are, and how we got here. And for us to come to see how the familial, societal, and cultural beliefs we live by were formed generations before us and deliberately passed down to us in order to maintain the status quo we live by today—even when we are committed to living in a just and equitable way.
If there is one positive thing about the collapse that is beginning–-ecological, democratic, economic–-it is the opportunity to envision a future where all life flourishes, and humanity is regenerated.
It is in the free-fall when we finally realize we have wings and can see what is possible when we let go of certainty and embrace the uncomfortable.
My commitment to co-creating a just and regenerative world for generations to come is what keeps my obligations aligned and purposeful.
I offer you a quote from my forthcoming book’s chapter:
Commitment (Phase One)
“Every transformation begins with a single, powerful choice—the decision to change. It’s in that moment of intention, when we recognize that our current way of living no longer serves us, that we plant the seed for growth. Intention is more than a fleeting wish or a vague desire for things to be different. It’s a conscious commitment to move forward, even when the path ahead is uncertain and uncomfortable. This decision is the foundation of all meaningful change, shaping not only how we approach the process but also the outcomes we create. ”
